Start the year with a lineup of wines the team is obsessed with: clean, organically farmed, and ridiculously drinkable!

Schiava! The light-bodied yet deeply flavorful red wine native to Alto Adige, Italy. This is kind of perfect for January; it's as complex as the region itself, where the chilly, snow-covered alpine mountainsides thaw under warming Mediterranean sunshine. This Schiava reminds me of toasted cocoa nibs and dried raspberries, with a silky finish. Pours the color of a dark rosé, but as flavorful as a Pinot Noir. Such a great wine from
Rottensteiner, where the vines grow on terraces near Bolzano as high as 1150 feet! Only 166 cases produced, and we snagged a few of 'em! If you enjoy the lighter side of reds, you will love this.

We're obsessed with the hand-riddled sparkling wines from Tom Sherwood's BXT Wines. But here's a secret: the Aussie transplant also makes a killer Syrah from the renowned Shake Ridge Ranch in Amador County, and we love it so much it is January's BOTTLE OF THE MONTH! Why is this wine called "Therapy"? Well, as Tom puts it, working with Ann Kramer, farmer of Shake Ridge, is truly winemaking "therapy," providing motivation and inspiration throughout his winemaking journey. In honor of Ann's generous spirit, 100% of the sales profits are donated to Abode Services in Napa to support emergency housing intervention for our at-risk neighbors. Great wine, great cause!

ROLLE (aka Vermentino) from the Côtes Catalans, in the Pyrénées-Orientales department in France, covering the eastern portion of French Catalonia near the border with Spain. This bottle is featured in this month's Explore Like A Somm club for good reason: we were absolutely stunned by its rich, textured palate full of tropical fruits like green mango, pineapple, and Buddha's hand citrus. The vineyard is ideally positioned at the crossing of mid-slope terraces of the Agly Valley, benefiting from Mediterranean warmth while maintaining freshness from rocky soils and 650 feet
of elevation. We're also currently pouring this by the glass, so come by and ask for a taste!

Technically, these wines don't exist on our online shop due to their rarity and fine dining restaurant-only status—BUT you can stop in the shop to pop a bottle!

Founded in 2005 by husband-and-wife team John Raytek and Phoebe Bass, Ceritas has achieved cult status as one of Northern California's most sought-after producers of terroir-driven Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The Cuvée Annabelle Pinot Noir and TBH Chardonnay were released this past fall, and they are both so perfect.
Sourced from King Ridge Vineyard in the Fort Ross-Seaview AVA, high in
the mountainous West Sonoma Coast, the Calera-clone Cuvée Annabelle Pinot Noir shows dark red and purplish fruit: wild raspberry, dark cherry, red plum, rose petal, lavender, sweet pipe tobacco and cardamom spice, with lovely depth and textural richness.
The TBH Vineyard Chardonnay hails from delicate, fine-grained Goldridge soils, located in Graton within the Green Valley of Russian River Valley AVA. The
Old Wente clonal selection produces tiny clusters of exceptionally concentrated, zippy, and mineral-laden Chardonnay with a seamless balance between richness and freshness.

Thinking about our physical & mental health in January.

Dry January? We Got You. Look, life is too short for club soda and lime. Whether you're observing Dry January or just taking a break, our alcohol-free selection proves you don't have to sacrifice flavor. Proxies, NON, and Kally aren't trying to be wine—they are a wine alternative. Made from teas, verjus, and botanicals, these are complex beverages meant to be chilled and served in a wine glass, bringing all the ritual and pleasure of wine
drinking to the table without the alcohol. We're particularly loving the Bolle Spritz Classico—a non-alcoholic riff on the classic Aperol Spritz that's as bright and bittersweet as the original. And the Pentire canned cocktails from the UK are filled with coastal botanicals delivering satisfaction in every sip.
From sparkling alternatives to NA beers and creative zero-proof cocktails, we've put together options that actually taste good. Stop by to explore our full 0% Dry Bar menu, or shop the collection online!

Something personal: Cara's Reading List This January
|
I'm always reading something—usually a mix of wine stuff, sci-fi weirdness, and books that make me think critically about our world. One of my 2026 intentions is to read five books a month for pleasure, plus important pieces of wine news and developments. Here's what's currently stacked on my nightstand or queued in my Libby app:
Non-Fiction: - Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer - As both a botanist and member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, Kimmerer weaves Indigenous wisdom, botanical science, and historical facts to explore our reciprocal relationship with the natural world. Highly recommend the audiobook—her voice is as soothing as
the stories she tells.
- Enshittification: Why Everything Suddenly Got Worse and What to Do About It by Cory Doctorow - A sharp dissection of how tech platforms inevitably decay as they prioritize profits over users, and what we can do about it. (I think I will love hate-reading about Elon and Zuck.)
- The State of the US Wine Industry 2026 by Rob McMillan - The essential annual report breaking down the economic realities, challenges, and trends shaping American wine right now. (The U.S. wine industry is still contracting, but 2026 looks to be a transitional year, not a recovery year. Woof.)
Fiction: - The Iron Garden Sutra by AD Sui - I snagged an advanced reader copy of this upcoming sci-fi mystery by a Ukrainian speculative fiction author. It follows a monk and his embedded AI assistant on a seemingly abandoned generation ship. Explores spirituality, loss of faith, and what it means to find connection in a fractured universe. Out in February!
- Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar - This debut novel follows an Iranian-American poet who yearns to be a great author while navigating grief, addiction, and the search for transcendence in Middle America. Incredible twist and beautiful ending. Loved it.
- There Is No Antimemetics Division by qntm - Mind-bending horror sci-fi about ideas you literally can't remember and the secret division fighting threats that erase themselves from memory. How do you fight a war against an enemy with perfect camouflage when you can never even know you're at war? I just started this and I'm hooked.
And speaking of reading: I'm heading to Australia at the end of the month for a nearly two-weeks journey through wine country and culture with Jane Lopes and John Ross, MS of Legend Australian Imports! I'm rereading their groundbreaking book How to Drink Australian: An Essential Modern Wine Book to prep for the trip. Expect some killer Australian wines to hit our shelves when I get back, and make sure you're following my personal Instagram stories for daily photos and vidz.
Have any suggestions for my reading list? You can reply straight to this email (I get the replies) or hit me up on GoodReads. I'd love to hear your thoughts!
