Limited Drop: 2023 Burgundy from a winemaking power couple

PIERRE-YVES & CAROLINE

Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey & Caroline Morey standing together in a barrel chai.

We just got word that a small parcel of 2023 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey and Caroline Morey is on its way to us, and I wanted to reach out before these disappear. If you know these wines, you know how quickly they go.
If you don't, let me tell you why this is special.

A Power Couple Making Magic in Chassagne

Pierre-Yves Colin is the eldest son of Marc Colin, the legendary vigneron who put Saint-Aubin on the map. After nearly a decade leading what many consider the golden age at Domaine Marc Colin, Pierre-Yves and his wife Caroline Morey struck out on their own in 2003. With a 6-hectare inheritance of heirloom parcels and purchased fruit from top Côte de Beaune growers, the Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey domaine was born.

Caroline Morey is the eldest daughter of the equally famed Jean-Marc Morey. When her father retired in 2014, she took a portion of the family's vineyards to start her own domaine. The Morey family has been in Chassagne since the mid-16th century (Albert Morey first started domaine bottling in 1950), and those prized vineyards throughout Chassagne and Santenay have now passed to Caroline.

Today, they share a winery in Chassagne-Montrachet, where they're making some of the most sought-after wines in Burgundy. Both use indigenous yeasts, ferment and age in 350L barrels, and skip the lees-stirring (bâtonnage) for the whites. The result? Wines of precision, purity, and extraordinary clarity of terroir. Jancis Robinson once said tasting PYCM's Bourgogne Blanc was "like discovering the vinous equivalent of the Gettysburg Address." That's the level we're talking about here.

The 2023 Vintage

After several years of tiny harvests, 2023 gave Burgundy both quality and quantity. The whites are being hailed as very good to great— crystalline, precise, with remarkable freshness despite the warm growing season. PYCM's early picking preserved beautiful acidity, and the wines show that signature energy and verve.

The reds are bright, juicy, and charming, especially where producers like these kept yields in check and nailed the harvest timing.

What we're getting:

Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Whites:

  • Bourgogne Chardonnay – Don't let the "Bourgogne" designation fool you. This consistently punches way above its weight, showing the detail and focus that define PYCM's style. 5 bottles available.
  • Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Beaune "Bout du Monde" – From higher-altitude vineyards above Saint-Aubin. Think red apple, nectarine, crisp acidity, and a revivifying mineral finish. 5 bottles available.

Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Reds:

  • Nuits-Saint-Georges – While PYCM is legendary for his whites, his redsare equally sought-after by sommeliers and collectors. This NSG shows the structured, precise elegance that defines the appellation. Expect bright red fruit balanced by fine-grained tannins and that characteristic freshness.
    2 bottles available.
  • Santenay "La Comme" 1er Cru – This Premier Cru sits right next to Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Embazees and shows extraordinary finesse. The 2023 (made with 35% whole bunch) has fine strawberry and alpine raspberry aromatics, silky on the palate with refined tannins. It's almost irresistible even young. 4 bottles available.

Caroline Morey Red:

  • Santenay – From the Le Chainey lieu-dit high on the slope in southern Santenay, this village wine shows fine bright sour cherry fruit with super-fine tannins and striking finesse. The 2023 (virtually all destemmed, aged in 30% new oak) has wonderfully fresh, crunchy fruit with elegant red berry notes; charming with serious structure. 6 bottles available.
